The province’s two senior football powerhouses earned their way to the New Brunswick finals with convincing Maritime Football League playoff wins on the weekend.
The Riverview Mustangs punished the Moncton Marshals 44-6 in their N.B. conference semi-final Saturday and the Saint John Wanderers did the same to the Simonds Longhorns Sunday, posting a 47-3 victory over their cross-town rivals.
The pair will battle for the Percy Burchill Trophy Saturday in Saint John, with the winner advancing to the Maritime Bowl against the Eastern Conference champion. The Wanderers won the only regular season meeting between the teams by a score of 14-10.
Jon Haines rushed for 185 yards and scored three touchdowns to power the Wanderers. Ty Sparks, Josh Brown, Doug MacPhee and Jeff Gillis also scored TDs for the winners. Andrew Chandler kicked a 35-yard field goal for the Longhorns.
In Eastern playoff action Saturday, the Halifax Shockers edged the P.E.I. Privateers 39-34 and the top-seeded Dartmouth Knights smacked the Capital Area Gladiators 50-13.
Dartmouth and Halifax will meet to decide the Eastern crown Saturday. The Knights beat Halifax 41-6 in the first week of the season.
The Maritime Bowl is set for Aug. 13 at St. Mary’s University in Halifax.
