Recap
The Marshals opened the scoring early in the first quarter thanks to a Saint John fumble on its first play from scrimmage following the opening kickoff. Moncton drove to the Wanderers five yard line but had to settle for a field goal by Greg Smith.
Later in the first quarter 40 yard scamper by Kevin Muise set the Wanderers up on the Marshals five yard line. Three plays later Muise banged in from the one to give Saint John a 6-3 lead.
The second and third quarters were dominated by defence. Neither team’s offence could string together more than a couple of first downs without being forced to punt.
With less than seven minutes remaining in the game Saint John drove the ball down to the Moncton five yard line but could not punch in for the score. The Marshals were unable to move the ball and were forced to punt. The kick was off the side of the punters foot leaving the Wanderers on the Moncton 15 yard line. This time Saint John would capitalize when Quarterback Richard Naves hit Doug McPhee on a 10 yard touchdown pass.
In the last minute of the game a scrambling Naves found Jon Haines on a 52 yard pass and run play for the game’s final score. Todd White would add the convert to bring the final score to 19-3 for Saint John.
