Recap
These two teams last played one another in 1962. The Wanderers won that game and the rematch 40 years later. Saint John took the opening kickoff and used a mix of runs and short passes to march the length of the field. The drive culminated in a 20 yard touchdown pass from Richard Naves to Jeff Thomas. Todd White added the convert.
The Wanderers stretched their lead to 14-0 in the second quarter when Naves and Thomas combined on a 70 yard pass and run play. White was again good on the convert. A missed field goal raised the score to 15-0. The Buccaneers answered back just before halftime when quarterback Matt Elliott found the end zone on a 5 yard run.
After a scoreless third quarter the Wanderers drove to the Halifax 5 yard mainly due to a 35 yard ramble by 240 pound fullback Chris Johnson. From here Naves found Doug McPhee in the end zone for the major and White successfully added the convert to put the Wanderers up 22-7.
With a little more than a minute remaining in the game Jason Warren of the Buccaneers broke loose on a 40 yard pass play to narrow the score to 22-14. The Bucs’ attempt at a short kickoff went out of bounds. The Wanderers were able to run out the clock and preserve the victory.
