Recap

In the showdown for first place the Wanderers struck first when Jeff Thomas went 65 yards on a slotback reverse. The Gladiators would answer back on their next possession capping a long drive with quarterback  Allison Brooks finding Jeff Taylor on a 30 yard touchdown pass. Danny Gibson added the convert.

The Wanderers regained the lead by launching a long drive of their own that culminated in a 10 yard touchdown pass from Richard Naves to Doug McPhee. McPhee would also add the convert.

In the second quarter Capital Area moved ahead once more on a 20 yard touchdown pass from Allison Brooks to Mark Huys. Gibson booted the convert to give Capital Area a 14-13 lead at half.

The third quarter belonged to the Gladiators. Gibson notched a 10 yard field goal and then converted Allison Brooks 30 yard touchdown pass to Dave Pepin. The Wanderers suffered a major blow when quarterback Richard Naves had to leave the game with a shoulder injury.

With less than a minute to go the Wanderers intercepted a Brooks pass deep in the Gladiators end and then climaxed a short a short drive with Jeff Thomas’ 2 yard plunge. A two point conversion attempt and a subsequent short kick off were both unsuccessful. The Gladiators were able to run out the clock and preserve the victory.

The two teams split their two regular season games but the Gladiators outscored the Wanderers 44-41 overall and will win any tie in the standings between the teams on this basis.
